Surfacing next to Hicham’s vessel after a second solo recce, Tom bobbed around in the sea next to the boat. He took his regulator out and his mask off.

Henry hauled him up and helped him off with his kit. Hicham looked to the west where the sun was setting. ‘That is it for the day?’

Tom nodded, his face grim. Hicham pointed the boat back towards the port. A boat that now felt too small for the job at hand. Henry definitely wasn’t the dive buddy Tom wanted but he was the one he had.

‘Mate, there aren’t any easy ways in. There’s loads of sharp metal and bits of debris blocking the way. The good thing is, I know which bit of the boat I need to aim for.’

Reaching across, Tom pulled the sketch from his bag. ‘Uncle Michael said we needed to look on the lower deck. That’s easy. There are only two decks to choose from and he said that here—’ he pointed at the sketch, ‘—is only a yard or two off the main corridor.

‘It’s weird but, where the ship’s been torn, once you get your head round it, it’s like seeing an architect’s model opened up. You can see where the decks are, where the corridors are. Even with the twisting and the effects of the blast and the sea on it since…’ Tom paused and gave Henry a tired smile. ‘I know where I need to go. It’s just going to be difficult getting there.’

They were leaning back against the side of the boat as it waddled its way through a gentle swell. Tom dragged himself off the deck and moved next to Hicham in the wheelhouse. ‘I want to leave the harbor at sun-up tomorrow. What time is that?’

Hicham looked amused. ‘Zero five twenty-eight.’

Tom felt like a kid who had dropped his ice cream. It was nearly nine p.m. Without sleep, he would be no good to anyone. ‘Call it zero six hundred hours. We’ll be on the quay five minutes before that.’
